The number of the day: 3,000 hazelnuts

Sales manager Ines Ahrens calculates that close to 3,000 nuts are used each day in the biscuits baked by the Plentz bakery from Oberkrämer, one of the exhibitors in the Brandenburg hall. Each biscuit contains three nuts. They are sold in bags of ten or loose under the name “Three hazelnuts for Cinderella“.

Ecology student from Potsdam is the 200,000th visitor

A young woman from Potsdam who is studying ecology, evolution and nature conservation is the 200,000th visitor to this year’s Green Week. For the 24 year-old Lisa Giese and students accompanying her their first visit to a trade fair hit the jackpot when they arrived at the south entrance on Wednesday. She received a large bouquet of flowers and a gift basket containing organically grown specialities from the Organic Hall. “Just what I needed“, she said with delight. But it was actually not food that lured her to the fair: “We are more interested in obtaining information.“

Rye and small herrings are major food items in Estonia

The main focus of the Estonian food displays at the Green Week 2014 is on dairy products, venison and fish, as well as berries and rye products. Rye bread is a national dish in Estonia, because the cornflower (known in Estonia as the rye flower) is also a national symbol, along with the small Baltic herring. This fish accounts for 81 of the total catch (with bass making up 6 per cent and flounders and smelt 3 per cent each).

Kazakhstan: Mare’s milk – the nomads’ sparkling wine

This year the slogan for the display by Kazakhstan was “many peoples – a varied cuisine“. “There are over 100 ethnic groups and nationalities living in our country“, says Galina Nurtasinowa from the German – Kazakh Society. I t is therefore not surprising to find that ‘chi’ is frequently served. This is cabbage prepared in the Korean way. Western China is where a dish called ’Manti‘ originates from. It consists of two steamed pastry pockets filled with lamb meat, pumpkin and onions. As former nomads, horse meat is one of their basic food items, as is ’kumys‘, a fermented mare’s milk with an alcohol content of 2.5 per cent. “We call it the nomads’ sparkling wine“, says Ms. Nurtasinowa. While the USSR was in existence the company JSC Rukhat produced confectionery for all the republics. Nowadays the truffles and chocolates are sold around the world. “Here at the Green Week we are testing the response to ’Aisulu‘, confectionery with a marshmallow centre. Aisulu is the name of a beautiful girl“, explains the managing director Karl Semrau.
