80th Green Week: Anniversary edition features numerous highlights

CityCube to host opening ceremonies and supporting programme for the first time

Riga / Berlin, 25 August 2014 – Taking as its slogan ’Take the time’ Latvia, next year’s partner country, is making preparations to host its largest display to date at the International Green Week Berlin 2015 (IGW). From 16 to 25 January this Baltic state, which in 1992 attended the fair for the first time and which in the first half of 2015 will take over the EU Council presidency, will be promoting its wide range of specialities from local regions.

At today’s press conference in Riga Jānis Dūklavs, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia, emphasised the importance of his country’s participation in the Green Week:

“Latvia is pleased to be a partner country of the International Green Week. As the partner country, we will be able to take the opportunity to present our marvellous land, nature and achievements in agriculture, forestry, fishery and rural tourism to the many visitors from around the world. We would like to spread the word about Latvia which has a lifelong tradition in exporting food and products, long-term and future-oriented production and offers wide-ranging tourism possibilities. Latvia is characterised by deep-rooted traditions which, in their modern form, continue to be maintained today. Our priority, therefore, is sustainability because soil is Latvia’s main natural resource. Thanks to the wise and sustainable activities of the agriculture, fishery and forestry industries, consumers are able to receive high-quality, fresh, safe and healthy agricultural products and food. We are happy that these products will be available at the International Green Week 2015 in Berlin.”

More than 1,600 exhibitors from around 70 countries and over 400,000 trade visitors and members of the general public are expected to be at the show. Besides providing a global market overview, companies from every part of Germany will be hosting the largest display of authentic and local specialities from the individual federal States, including food items and luxury foods, that can be found at any exhibition. The programme of conference events will focus in particular on the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture 2015 (GFFA), which takes place from 15 to 17 January. Around 70 ministers of agriculture, deputy ministers and high-ranking members of the food and farming industries are expected to attend.

Special displays and product markets

In 2015, at the combined display of the two main organisations representing the German food industry, the Federation of Food Law and Food Science (BLL) and the Federation of German Food and Drink Industries (BVE), the focus will again be on the ‘Food Dialogue’. Visitors keen on exploring new culinary horizons can fully satisfy their desires at the various product markets. They include the BioHall, the fish market (Erlebniswelt Fisch), the Herbs, Spices & Tea product market, the beer market (proBier market) as well as wines and sparkling wines from Germany and other wine-growing regions around the world.

Every visitor to the Green Week can find out about the many things the farming and food industries have to offer at the Farm Experience, a joint initiative of the German Farmers’ Union and information.medien.agrar which is coordinated by the Organisation for the Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture. The Livestock Hall (Hall 25) will be showcasing German livestock. Among other events the focus will be on the Federal Show for Sport Ponies (16 to 18 Jan.) and the Federal Uckermark Beef Cattle Show (23 to 25 Jan.). In 2015 the special show of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) will be among the displays providing especially useful information and exhibits. At nature.tec, ministries, institutions, associations and companies will be presenting the entire range of farming and forestry based resources used for materials and fuels. At the ‘Multi-talented wood’ show visitors can find out for themselves about the many aspects of wood as a raw material. The exhibitors at the combined display entitled ’Keen on the Country – working together for rural areas’ will be providing an insight into thriving rural life, and the German Hunting Association (DJV) will be inviting visitors to take part in an informative hunting trail.

The gardening section of the Green Week will be exhibiting spectacular floral arrangements. Inside the Floral Hall more than 30,000 early flowering plants will delight the eyes of onlookers. The Berlin Regional Gardening Association will be showing visitors how important urban allotments are for pursuing leisure and relaxation in large cities.

The 80th edition of the Green Week will look back on a past spanning 89 years. Originally a mere local product market when it debuted in 1926, it has now become the world's largest consumer show for agriculture, food and horticulture. Since that year, more than 83,000 exhibitors from 128 countries have presented their wide-ranging products from around the world to over 31.5 million trade visitors and to the general public.
