Green Week 2019: Intensified focus on food startups

Messe Berlin creates two Startup Days for new businesses

They are brewing in shared apartments, trying out new ideas at universities, or working on farms and in the fields. They are adopting new forms of production and distribution, working with innovative ingredients, or causing upsets in their own particular sectors with their unconventional ideas. We are referring to the founders of new food businesses, who are influencing what we will be finding on our plates in the future. During the two Startup Days (23/24 Jan.) the Professional Center at the International Green Week Berlin 2019 (18 – 27 Jan.) will provide an exclusive platform for these innovative businesses from the food industry. Twenty selected new businesses will be competing in front of a panel of judges at the pitch sessions and will also be presenting their ideas and products in the display area. The deadline for applications from interested startups is 12 October 2018.

Green Week project manager Lars Jaeger: “For everyone involved in this market we aim to offer a concentrated format at the Green Week and, extending beyond the trade fair itself, to create a lasting network with contacts to the food industry. For this reason the Startup Days have deliberately been planned to take place in a professional environment. For us these new businesses are the partners of the future for Messe Berlin.”

Messe Berlin intends to use the Startup Days not only to turn the spotlight onto current food issues but also to present the changes that are taking place in consumer behaviour. Although the range on offer is largely determined by the leading players, the retail food trade is taking an increasing interest in new brands. The so-called microbrands meet a growing demand by consumers for differentiation in flavours, product origin, production or compatibility with eating habits, whether they are motivated by health, philosophical or religious reasons.

Taking these aspects into consideration, the Green Week puts a particular emphasis on its role as a test market and as a platform for product presentations. “No other place provides such a direct route to buyers from the food industry. And nowhere else is the combination of B2B and B2C target groups more evenly balanced than it is here. This trade fair offers the perfect basis for sales, for studying competitors and for personal access to consumer groups“, according to Jaeger.
