Food startups create new trends
Jury nominates 20 finalists for the Startup Days at the International Green Week Berlin 2019
The 20 finalists that will be staging their presentations on the two Startup Days at the International Green Week Berlin 2019 (18 -27 Jan,) have now been nominated by the eight-member jury. On 23 and 24 January the new businesses that have been selected will be using pitch sessions and the exhibition area at the Professional Center to present their business ideas and products. The Startup Days have been introduced by Messe Berlin to focus attention on current food-related issues and trends, and also to illustrate changing consumer behaviour. The so-called microbrands meet a growing demand by consumers for differentiation in flavours, product origin, production or compatibility with eating habits, whether they are motivated by health, philosophical or religious reasons. In this way food startups also influence what consumers will be finding on their plates in the near future.
This is also evident from the extremely diverse items that have been submitted for this competition. They include insect-based foods as a sustainable and tasty alternative to the proteins obtained from animals raised for slaughter. Among the other items are beef that contains no additives or preservatives and is delivered directly from the farm to the front door, glass jars of long-life, additive-free dumplings made from surplus bread, hemp as a regional superfood, glass straws made using solar energy as a re-usable alternative to the billions of plastic straws that are thrown away each year, vegan ice cream spoons made from edible fibres, a sustainable concept for lifestyle products on the basis of cacao fruits as part of an effort to transfer as much of the food chain as possible to the countries supplying the raw materials, and the use of organic jackfruits as a way of improving the production of vegetarian meals.
Access to the Professional Center at the Green Week is reserved exclusively for trade visitors, exhibitors and representatives of the press. In particular new food businesses at various stages of the startup process can establish contacts here with major decision-makers from the food trade, multipliers and investors, as well as project or sales partners, and can also benefit from the wide-ranging media presence at this trade fair.
