Klöckner: Digitalisation can resolve conflicting objectives
In the opinion of the German minister of agriculture Julia Klöckner, digitalisation enables many of the conflicting objectives of agriculture and consumers to be resolved. “We need to find a new way to engage in a debate“, the CDU politician stated at the traditional Question Time for the Press at the IGW 2019, commenting that both sides of the debate are growing further apart. This also contributes to alienation between cities and the countryside. “We need the fastest possible internet speeds throughout our fields and forests.” It is unacceptable on the one hand to promote renewable energy in the countryside but to regard the installation of higher transmission standards there as unnecessary. “For example, digitalisation on arable land can help to reduce the amount of pesticides used. This is a cheaper solution and helps to protect the environment”, Klöckner said.

#MinistryofLife: Pilot a drone with the aid of virtual reality glasses
How would you like to fly over a field at 64 kilometres per hour at a height of 180 metres? This is now possible on the stand of the Leibniz Agricultural Land Research Centre (ZALF) in Hall 23a – thanks to virtual reality. In real life ZALF deploys its so-called TRON drone in order to determine the quality of agricultural soils. Equipped with the latest digital camera technology this small, self-piloted aircraft with a wingspan of 3.5 metres can take up to 800 high resolution images while flying over a 60 hectare field. And it can do this within an accuracy of two centimetres. By way of comparison: a satellite image only achieves a maximum of two metres and is also considerably more expensive. And what is it all for? “The data helps to determine the characteristics of the soil with extreme accuracy. Depending on the local conditions we can then provide farmers with recommendations about ways in which they can cultivate their soil more sustainably, for example by irrigating the soil or applying fertilizers with greater precision”, according to a member of the ZALF team, Hendrik Schneider. This not only makes soils more fertile but also helps to store the carbon from the greenhouse gas CO₂ in the soil, thereby combating climate change.

VDAJ Agricultural Journalists’ Prize awarded to Dr. Andreas Möller
Why do farmers so often fail to gain the confidence of the public? What is the basis for the increasing alienation between the urban population and those who live in the countryside? Dr. Andreas Möller, Head of Communication for the mechanical engineering company Trumpf, investigated these questions in his article “Stop dreaming” in the Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper, and presented ten theses intended to create a new view of farming. For this he was awarded the Communication Prize of the Federation of German Agricultural Journalists (VDAJ) at the International Green Week Berlin 2019. “It is these very subjects that we experience in a pronounced way in parliament“, said Julia Klöckner, Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, who presented the award together with the President of the German Farmers’ Union, Joachim Rukwied, and the Chairman of the VDAJ, Dr. Katharina Seuser.

President of the Farmers’ Union Rukwied: “The consequences of the drought will be noticeable for years to come“
”Agriculture in Germany will suffer the consequences of the droughts of recent years for some time to come. Nevertheless, we are cautiously optimistic about the future“, said Joachim Rukwied, president of the German Farmers’ Union, on the occasion of the Q&A session which took place with the Association of German Agricultural Journalists at the start of the Green Week, and which is a long-standing event. Farmers in Germany are planning to invest in the order of 4.3 billion euros in the first half of 2019. That is 300 million euros more than in the first half of 2017. Rukwied also called for a swift and definite conclusion to the negotiations on Brexit. ”It is extremely important for European farmers to continue to have free access to the UK market.“

Tasting the future today on the stand of the BVE and BLL
What will the future taste like? From 18 to 27 January 2019 at the International Green Week the combined stand of the Federation of Food Law and Food Science (BLL) and the Federal Association of the German Food and Drink Industries (BVE) will be offering fascinating answers to this question as well as lots of flavours to sample. At the Cook & Talk event at the cooking display in Hall 22 celebrity guests will be preparing culinary delights and the latest dishes. On day one of the fair (18 Jan.) at 12 noon Julia Huthmann, founder of Jacky F, will be finding out what secrets jackfruits have in store. Afterwards at 2.30 p.m., interested visitors can find out whether regional products and McDonald’s can be brought together. Other topics examining the future of food will include the sustainability of fish products, the Incredible Burger, algae as a future food product, and a live version of the Jungle Camp.

Agriculture with hearts and drones –THE experience at the Green Week
Visitors to the Green Week can experience agriculture with hearts and drones in the exhibition halls at Berlins radio tower, the Funkturm. As the minister of agriculture Julia Klöckner explains: “This is where we have made it possible to experience the vital subject of agriculture in a real, multimedial way. Visitors can study the operations of a digital dairy parlour or a digital vineyard with integrated wine cellar. It is also possible to examine a beehive and see the work of one of agriculture’s most useful creatures.” They can also test intelligent packaging, sample milk and bread fresh from the bakery, and well as finding our for themselves what foodstuffs with reduced sugar and salt taste like.

Portuguese products with Atlantic sea air
The sea breezes from the Atlantic drift through the Portuguese stand at the IGW 2019. Under the general brand name of “Foods from Portugal – Atlantic Essence” the Inov Cluster agricultural association is presenting products that combine tradition, authenticity and innovation. These include olive oil, wine, pasteis de nata (custard tart) and other bakery products, cheese, meat and sausages. Portuguese specialities are very popular, and exports to Germany increased from 138 to 215 million euros between 2013 and 2017. The main items were fresh fruit (especially raspberries and pears), beverages, fresh vegetables and preserved food items.

An invitation to Hall 10.2 from the partner country Finland
Greetings from the wilderness is the message from the partner country at the IGW 2019, which is inviting everyone attending the fair to visit the Finland hall (Hall 10.2) from 18 January. On 17 January 2019, the day before the fair officially opens, there will be a press conference for representatives of the media, from 3 to 4 p.m. The speakers will be Jari Leppä, Finland’s Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Juha Marttila, President of the Finnish National Association of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK), and Mats Nylund, President of the National Association of Swedish-speaking Agricultural Producers in Finland (SLC), and they will also be available to answer questions from journalists. Following this there will be an opportunity for media representatives to get to know the exhibitors and their products in advance of the fair, and to conduct interviews.

Bavaria: From pigs raised on straw litter to performers in local costume
Bavaria, the state renowned for its culinary and musical attractions, is on display in Hall 22b at the IGW 2019. Some 40 producers of various delicacies from every region will be on hand to provide a wide and varied range of food and beverages, with everything from pigs raised on a straw litter to Franconian wines. Holidays on the farm are being promoted by 15 regional tourism associations and working groups. The traditional beer garden in the hall is the ideal meeting place for anyone wanting to take a break from all the hectic activity at the fair, as well as for anyone who likes folklore: Fifty music groups and performers in costume, with almost 1,000 participants, will be appearing here during the fair.

A big anniversary: Lower Saxony’s marketing organization marks 50 years at the IGW
The Marketing Company for Agriculture and the Food Industry of Lower Saxony has been exhibiting at the International Green Week for the past 50 years, making this the oldest combined agricultural presentation at the fair. This year the state’s display comprises ten group exhibitors representing 62 participating companies, and there are also nine individual exhibitors. The Start-up Meeting Place features innovative business ideas such as “Foie Royale”, an alternative to foie gras, and the “New Snow Ice”, containing 60 per cent less sugar than normal ice cream. This year’s special anniversary is being celebrated on 23 January with 2,000 invited guests at the traditional Lower Saxony Evening.

Brandenburg is promoting its agricultural products
“For the extensive state of Brandenburg the world’s largest consumer fair provides an ideal opportunity to publicize the diversity of its rural regions and to promote its agricultural produce”, according to the Brandenburg Minister of Agriculture and the Environment, Jörg Vogelsänger, speaking shortly before the start of the fair. Once again this year the display in Hall 21a largely features some very small companies as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. There are combined stands featuring various counties, municipalities and tourism associations, as well as professional associations and federations. The total of 78 exhibitor displays includes 75 market stalls of which 28 are combined stands, as well as three catering areas, those of Schloss Diedersdorf, Alte Ölmühle from Wittenberge and Jakobs-Höfen from Beelitz. Making their debut this year at the fair are the county of Havelland (Stand 159), Hebenbräu GmbH (169) and Friki Storkow GmbH (111).

Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: With its own hall for the past 20 years
Mecklenburg-West Pomerania is exhibiting in its own hall for the 20th time at the International Green Week. “On this special anniversary I am particularly pleased that all the counties in the state are represented at the fair for the first time”, said the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Till Backhaus. Using the slogan “Enjoy Mecklenburg-West Pomerania” some 60 companies are exhibiting on the 1,800-metre display area. Among this year’s highlights are many different kinds of fish, ostrich meat sausages, apple and quince jelly, and a wide range of award-winning beers, while the new exhibits include marzipan bread filled with chocolate fish from Schoko-laderie de Prie in Rostock. The Minister President Manuela Schwesig is expected to attend on the State’s Day on Saturday.
