Klöckner: “Woodlands are a must-have”
The Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner has promised that politicians will make lasting efforts to preserve Germany’s forests and to promote their sustainable reorganisation. “Woodland is not just nice-to-have, it is a must-have”, she stated at the opening of the ”Woodland Dialogue” on Thursday at the Green Week. The trees that cover just under one third of the land area of Germany are “the number one protectors of the climate. Without woodlands and the timber that they provide, CO2 emissions would be some 14 per cent higher.” Last year alone over half a billion euros were approved for various measures in woodlands as part of the so-called climate package. Furthermore increased assistance was provided for communal and private woodland owners. To the question of whether non-native tree species should also be used in woodland restoration she stated: “There is no either-or.” She is open to any suggestions, “but they must be backed up by science“. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer at the IGW: Flowers, bread and bees
The head of the CDU party and Federal Minister of Defence Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer began her tour of the IGW on 23 January 2020 following a warm welcome from the agriculture minister Julia Klöckner in the Floral Hall. After a visit to the Central Horticultural Association she proceeded to the Farm Experience in Hall 3.2 where, among others, she met representatives of the German Farmers’ Union, the Countrywomen’s Association and the Rural Youth organisation. Johannes Kamm, general manager of the Central Association of the Germany Bakery Trade, presented the minister with a wheat-rye loaf together with a personal dedication. And she received something suitable to spread on it, in the form of German honey, from the adjacent German Beekeepers’ Association. Kramp-Karrenbauer conveyed the beekeepers’ request for more areas to be left uncovered, in order to help protect bees, to the Federal Office for Infrastructure, Environmental Protection and Armed Forces Services in Hall 27. On the stand she was able to see for herself the organisation’s efforts to attract trainees. There was also time for a spontaneous closing photograph on the stand of the German Hunters’ Association opposite, with some labrador-retrievers. Karliczek: Bio-economy and its future importance
What the Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek held in her hand during her visit to the Green Week on 23 January 2020 was no normal laptop case, but one of the products that provide a perfect example of sustainable economic management. “It has been made from apple left-overs, synthetic resin, plastic bottles and fishing nets”, explained one of the staff on the stand of her ministry, which is devoted to bio-economics, the subject of the Science Year 2020. With the associated National Bio-Economic Strategy the German government is pursuing “the objective of preserving our basis for life while at the same time retaining our economic strength”. In this context it is important to ensure the commitment of young people in particular. At a workshop the CDU politician assisted with making smoothies from algae. “As a major attraction for the public, the Green Week is an ideal occasion for securing people’s support for sustainability”, said Karliczek. Fridays for Future: Dialogue about climate protection
The Fridays for Future climate activists have to expect to encounter interest as well as abuse. They have a stand at the Green Week for the first time. Tanja and Anuk (both 14) from Treptow believe that it is important to have a presence at the IGW. “We want to draw attention to the fact that food is political”, says Tanja Maiwald. Tanja and Anuk have already changed their eating habits because of the climate. Both are vegetarians and mainly try to buy locally produced organic foodstuffs. Spokesman Niklas Schober regards the IGW as important because of the opportunities it has provided for discussions with representatives of agriculture and the food industry, and for acquainting them with the objectives of Fridays for Future. Partner country Croatia: Charming Istria
One of the three culinary regions which Croatia is presenting at the Green Week is Istria, which is situated on a heart-shaped peninsula in the country’s west. Istria is exhibiting a combination of continental and Mediterranean cuisine and is widely known for its wine and olive products, fresh seafood, Istrian pasta and truffles. Visitors to the Croatian national kitchen in Hall 10.2 can sample fuži, a traditional type of Istrian pasta with truffles, a highly appreciated speciality among gourmets. They can also savour lamb cutlets, fish, risotto as well as cold dishes where the main ingredient is seafood. Exhibitors representing Istria on the stands in the Croatia Hall (10.2) are Udruga proizvođača paškog sira, Zigante tartufi, Vinistra, S.I.C., Kampanjola, PZ Vrbnik and San Antonio. Coffee from Nepal for the first time
For decades it has become traditional for Aid through Trade to be represented by a wide range of Nepalese tea at the Green Week. This year for the first time the Himalayan country is also including coffee in its display, a crop that was first planted at altitudes of around 1800 metres a few years ago. The highlight of the traditional range of teas, apart from the popular Chai Masala with its mixture of spices, is white Sayto tea, for which only the buds are used. It can only be harvested for a few days each year and in small quantities. Tulashi with sacred basil, grown organically, helps to fight colds. “We mainly work with small farmers with their own plantations”, explains Samridhi Newa. Uganda is seeking importers for its pure natural jungle honey
Hardly anyone in this country realises that vast numbers of honey bees are bred in Uganda. The naturally pure honey from the jungle is very different to what is produced here, being denser, sweeter and non-sticky. Visitors to the fair are absolutely delighted and contacts have already been established with potential importers, says Alice Kiingi from Nordic Consultants and Promoters, which is organising the presentation of the Central African country at the Green Week for the first time. “This fair is perfect for us.” The company seeks to help small and medium-sized firms to sell to the European market. In addition to honey the focus is also on products made with vegetable fat from the shea tree. Mega lollies from the UK are a big hit
Initially Joseph Dobson only intended for the large jars containing mega-lollies as decoration for the stand. However, there was so much demand from visitors to the Green Week that Mike Vernon, who has been representing his home country for many years at the International Green Week, has been obliged to order more supplies. The lollies are available in various flavours such as salty caramel, rhubarb with custard, and traffic light, with colours that change from red to yellow and then green as the lolly is consumed. Completing the display are a wide range of fudges and toffees as well as such British specialities as lemon curd, Marmite and mint sauce, along with the Scottish national dish, haggis, now available in a vegetarian version too. Parliamentarian from Kenya with coffee from his own plantation
Since 2017 Joshua Kandie has been one of the four members of parliament for the recently founded Maendeleo Chap Chap party in the National Assembly in Nairobi. With the association Pro Kapsogo, established in Augsburg, he has been assisting his homeland and his current constituency of Baringo Central for many years through the construction of schools and the donation of emergency vehicles. A partnership with communities in Bavaria was also set up. But Kandie still finds time to represent his country at the Green Week. In addition to jewellery, handicrafts and tea, the stand also features coffee from his own plantation, two sugar-free beers, Balozi and White Cap, and Kenya Cane sugar cane spirits.
