It tastes best when it is cold smoked, according to Fabian Schäfer from the Leibniz Institute for Water Ecology and Inland Fisheries.

Finale at the weekend with a full programme ofshows
The Green Week nears its conclusion and during the weekend the 1,810 exhibitors from 72 countries will again be presenting a full programme. In addition the equestrian sports event Hippologica with eleven competitions in jumping, carriage driving, dressage and vaulting will ensure that all the seats in Hall 25 are filled. Among the highlights for the public again this year are the Floral Hall, No. 9, and the Livestock Halls, Nos. 25/26. From Norway to Rwanda, there are many restaurants on the stands presenting the culinary diversity that is a feature of this fair. The partner country, Croatia, is offering tempting food and beverages in Hall 10.2. There are more than 20 stages with a wide variety of shows and cookery demonstrations. There will also be music and other activities, for example in the halls occupied by Bavaria (22b), Brandenburg (21), Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and Baden-Württemberg (5.2) and Saxony-Anhalt (23). On the Northrhine-Westphalia stand (5.2a) the footballer Nina Windmüller extends an invitation to join in motion and movement, and following a cookery duel on Sunday the Berlin carnival prince and princess will be making an appearance. Also beginning on Sunday, on the Land Show stage in Hall 27, there will be the grand finale of the two-man indoor cross cut sawing championship. HIPPOLOGICA starts today at the Green Week
The largest indoor event in the capital, HIPPOLOGICA starts today in Halls 25 and 26. At the invitation of the regional equestrian sports association Landesverband Pferdesport Berlin-Brandenburg e. V. (LPBB), between now and Sunday riders from all over the region will be competing in eleven jumping, carriage driving, dressage and vaulting events. In the training arena in Hall 27 visitors can watch the horses and riders warming up. And on the exhibitors’ stands there is a wide range of equipment for horses and riders. Peter Fröhlich, general manager of the LPBB, sees HIPPOLOGICA as an opportunity to demonstrate just what makes equestrian sports so fascinating, in front of a large audience. Minister Klöckner presents awards to the best producers of Regent wine
Together with the German Wine Queen of the Nahe region, Angela Vogt, the Federal Minister of Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, presented awards at the Green Week to the best producers of wines made from the Regent grape. This year’s winners are the Haberkern vineyard in Baden-Württemberg (production area of less than ten hectares), the Bungert-Mauer vineyard in Rhineland-Palatinate (production area exceeding ten hectares) and the Kallstadt growers’ cooperative in Rhineland-Palatinate (growers’ cooperatives and wineries). As the minister pointed out, Regent is a very special grape variety “because, due to its resilience it does not require much in the way of pesticides. We at the ministry support this and progress continues to be made. The coming generation of grape varieties should be better adapted to cope with changing climatic conditions such as more dry spells. But the most important point is that the wines should taste good and be of a high quality.” The ministry’s Julius-Kühn Institute has been rewarding the best producers of Regent wines for the past eleven years. The institute itself has been breeding new varieties that are resistant to fungal diseases and are adapted to climate change. Lars Klingbeil: Green Week brings rural areas to Berlin
“I come here every year, but this is my first visit as secretary general of the SPD”, said Lars Klingbeil on Thursday during his tour of the International Green Week. The Green Week brings rural areas to the capital, and this is important for the political debates that take place here. On the stand of his own constituency, Heidekreis, the parliamentary representative held discussions with countrywomen and had his photo taken in a pink heart before heading for the neighbouring stand, where he met with start-ups from Lower Saxony and sampled an insect burger, which he declared to be “excellent”. Visiting the Neuland association as well as the Evangelical and Catholic Rural Youth, Klingbeil and the Deputy Chairman of the SPD, Kevin Künert, learned about their work and then called at the Farm Experience, the German Association of Food and Drink Industries and the German Foodstuffs Association. A home game for Kevin Kühnert
Although this was the first time that Kevin Kühnert was attending the Green Week in an “official” capacity, for the chairman of the Young Socialists and Deputy Chairman of the SPD this was a “home game”. “In previous years, together with a group of friends we took a day out to look around the fair.” This time the tour started with Limonana, a cult lemonade with mint from a no-longer-quite a start-up from Berlin. The company’s general manager Dominik Seele gave an assurance: as far as the market is concerned, “in Berlin we are already well established”. Kühnert is aware of the dilemma whereby there are “hardly any realistic points of reference” between protesting farmers on the one side and consumer advocates on the other. However, the Green Week is an “accepted place, where both sides can engage in discussions with one another. My feeling is that this is where there points of reference are created. Here I can get the answers to questions that I cannot get from any supermarket.” And for Kühnert it was indeed like playing at home. Not only did he meet people from the “Fridays for Future” stand, but also the organisation’s secretary general Lars Klingbeil and the Berlin justice senator Dirk Behrendt (Greens). Awards for organic farms from the Minister of Agriculture
The winning farms in the National Organic Cultivation Competition were described by Julia Klöckner as excellent examples and highly innovative. The prizewinners should be used as an example, said the Minister for Food and Agriculture. The competition is now in its twentieth year, but some of these farms have been operating in accordance with ecological criteria for much longer than that. The winners were Luna farm in Freden, which is very active in preserving endangered breeds of farm animals, Schloss Gut Obbach for its exemplary regional added value chains, and Schinkeler farms, a group of four organic farms, for their solidarity. Fish Information Centre: Zander breeders place their hopes in the closed cycle system
The two fine zander to be seen at the Fish Information Centre represent the most widely eaten fish in Germany, over 10,000 tonnes of which are consumed every year. However, only 55 tonnes are bred in this country, with another 500 tonnes being caught in Germany. The remainder is imported from faraway countries such as Kazakhstan. That is why, as Fabian Schäfer from the Leibniz Institute for Water Ecology and Inland Fisheries says, “The zander represents the hopes of the closed cycle system.” This system provides these fish with ideal living conditions: they are not seasonally dependent and require only minimal amounts of water, and after just 18 months they have attained an ideal weight for slaughter, which is twice as fast as in the wild. If the closed cycle system becomes established it would be a win-win situation for the environment, business and consumers. i.m.a: Successful education
The educational services provided at the “Farm Experience” at the International Green Week by i.m.a e.V. (information.medien.agrar e.V.) reached over 1,500 school pupils. The traditional schools’ press conference alone was attended by almost 500 young reporters. “For our educational work in agriculture the Green Week represents a particularly important starting point at the beginning of each year”, stated the general manager of i.m.a, Patrik Simon. Partner country Croatia: Central Croatia exhibits culinary diversity
Central Croatia is one of the four culinary regions that the partner country Croatia is presenting in Hall 10.2 at the Green Week. In addition to boasting a rich historical past and cultural heritage Central Croatia has numerous culinary specialities to offer, including fried turkey with mlinci – a traditional variation of pita bread – and zagorski štrukli. This Croatian dish is a pastry made with different fillings which can be boiled or baked. Visitors can sample these dishes at the Croatian national restaurant, where they can also enjoy traditional desserts such as međimurska gibanica, a layered cake made with puff pastry and filled with nuts, cottage cheese, poppy seed or apples. They can also try out kremšnita, a pudding und cream cake made with puff pastry, apple and cherry strudel, and makovnjača i orahnjača, a poppy seed or walnut roll and lino cake, made with lino lada, Croatia’s favourite chocolate spread. Oolong tea from the Dalai Lama’s exile in India
Visitors to the Green Week who are searching for premium teas from India have known for decades that Teehaus Shila from Hamburg is the place to go to. The Chatterjee family obtains its products directly from the plantations and can be relied upon for biologically correct cultivation and fair wages for the workers. Support is also provided for projects and farmers’ groups such as a palm candy farm and a tulsi farm in West Bengal. Sustainability is a subject of utmost concern to customers. Demand remains high for organic Darjeeling, chai and yoga teas as well as for ajurvedic herb teas. Pastel de nata from Portugal: A pastry with a history
The filled flaky pastry known as pastel de nata is proving very popular on the Portugal stand. “It was first made in Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in the Belém district of Lisbon. That is why it is also known as pastel de Belém”, explains stand director Carlos Lima. “It is strongly bound up with Portuguese identity, and is eaten at breakfast, as a dessert or with coffee.” Nine companies are represented this year on the Portuguese stand at the IGW.
