We strive to make our website and mobile application accessible. The declaration on digital accessibility is required by the Berlin Act on Accessible Information and Communication Technology (BIKTG Bln). The technical requirements for accessibility are set out in BITV 2.0.
This digital accessibility statement applies to the website www.messe-berlin.de.
Preparation of this accessibility statement
This statement was last revised on December 16, 2025. A technical review was last conducted in November/December 2025.
The technical review of accessibility was carried out in part by an external expert as part of a BIK BITV test and by a self-assessment in collaboration with our web agency.
How accessible is the service?
This website is partially accessible. Only some of the requirements of BITV 2.0 are met. Work is currently underway to implement and, in particular, improve accessibility. Accessible design is taken into account, especially when making additions and revisions.
Which areas are not accessible?
The areas listed below are not accessible for the following reasons:
Incompatibility with BITV 2.0
Areas that are not barrier-free:
Text alternatives
Alternative texts for graphics and objects: Not all graphics and objects have the required text alternatives.
Requirement 9.1.1 of EN 301 549
Action: A guide to accessibility was created to raise awareness among editors. Ongoing review of existing pages for suitable alternative texts. The alternative text field is now defined as a mandatory field in the content management system.
Schedule: Ongoing work | Pages can no longer be republished if alternative texts are missing.
Empty alt attributes for layout graphics: Not all layout graphics have the necessary alt attributes.
Requirement 9.1.1 of EN 301 549
Action: Buttons can no longer be saved without target and alt texts.
Schedule: Ongoing work
Information and relationships
Some pages use an illogical heading structure in which the hierarchy is not progressive.
Requirement 9.1.3.1 of EN 301 549
Action: A guide to accessibility has been created to raise awareness among editors. Particular attention is paid to ensuring a correct hierarchy when redesigning and creating new pages.
Schedule: Removal of barriers in the first quarter of 2026
Several navigation areas without clear descriptions.
Requirement 9.1.3.1 of EN 301 549
Action: Each navigation area will be marked as such with the element and additionally provided with aria-labelaria-labelledby.
Schedule: Implementation is currently in progress. Planned go-live date is the end of February 2026.
Inadequate or incorrect implementation of lists and/or list entries, or excessive, inappropriate and overloaded use of lists.
Requirement 9.1.3.1 of EN 301 549
Action: Clean-up of list entries by web agency
Schedule: Adjustment to take place in the first quarter of 2026
The context of information in the program overview grid is not implemented programmatically and is therefore not understandable or recognizable for screen reader users.
Requirement 9.1.3.1 of EN 301 549
Action: Currently, our program grid can only be displayed by integrating an iframe. We plan to replace the iframe integration with a decoupled, API-based architecture.
Schedule: The replacement of the iframe integration with an API-based architecture is currently under review. However, implementation is not realistic until the second half of 2026.
Accessible alternative: Alternatively, visit our “Accessibility” page. Our trade fair teams are available by phone or other communication channels and will be happy to provide information on the relevant program content.
Distinguishable
The submenus of the main navigation are displayed when the mouse pointer is moved over them or when they are focused using the keyboard. However, there is no way to close the open menus using the keyboard, neither with the tab key, nor with the space bar, nor with the ESC key.
Requirement 9.1.4.1 of EN 301 549
Action: The submenu will be implemented in such a way that it can be displayed and hidden in a controlled manner using the keyboard. This technical adjustment will be taken into account when revising our navigation concept.
Schedule: The design of the new navigation concept is planned for the first quarter of 2026. Implementation is planned for the end of June 2026.
Can be used without colours: Some information is only conveyed through the perception of colour.
Requirement 9.1.4.1 of EN 301 549
Action: Elements that convey information solely through color perception will no longer be used in the future. Links in the footer will be marked with a second distinguishing feature in the future.
Schedule: First quarter of 2026
Text contrasts: Not all text contrasts achieve a sufficient value.
Requirement 9.1.4.3 of EN 301 549
Aczion: A guide to accessibility was created to raise awareness among editors. Incorrect contrast values are identified and corrected, particularly during redesigns and the creation of new pages.
Schedule: Ongoing work
Navigable
The embedded iframes (video player on the home page and Google Map on the contact page) do not have a descriptive title attribute.
Requirement 9.2.4.1 of EN 301 549
Action: A title attribute will be added to the corresponding template.
Schedule: First quarter of 2026
Readable
Foreign language words and sections marked: Some foreign language terms are not marked as English.
Requirement 9.3.1 of EN 301 549
Action: Where possible, English terms will be avoided. Raising awareness of the issue among editors. Ongoing review of existing pages.
Schedule: In progress
Accessible alternative: English terms are explained or avoided altogether on our “Accessibility” page.
Help with data entry
Error detection and help with errors: Error messages in forms are insufficient in terms of content.

Schedule: The new form tool will be introduced in March 2026.
Documents
The documents available for download are not always accessible.
Action: Addressing the barrier in 2025.
